McGregor Retreat is a base camp for ten, positioned on the edge of the Thompson Chain of Lakes, one of the most diverse fisheries in northwest Montana. Nineteen lakes stretching twenty miles along Highway 2, halfway between Kalispell and Libby. McGregor Lake itself is 1,328 acres, the largest in the chain, known for lake trout that run 20-inch-plus on a good day, rainbow trout, yellow perch, and mountain whitefish. Work your way through the chain and the species list expands: northern pike, largemouth bass, kokanee salmon, westslope cutthroat, black crappie, and tiger muskie in Horseshoe Lake.

The state maintains nine fishing access boat launch sites across the Thompson Chain. Boat parking is on-site at the retreat. The nearest public launch is three miles out.

☆☆ HUNTING COUNTRY ☆☆

Northwest Montana is serious hunting country. Elk, whitetail deer, and mule deer populations draw dedicated hunters from across the country, and the terrain between the Cabinet Mountains to the south and the Salish Mountains to the north holds all of it. The retreat positions a party of ten close to that country with proper lodging, a chef's kitchen, and the kind of space that makes a multi-day hunt actually comfortable.

The west-facing deck is where the group ends up every evening. The fire pit below it is where the day gets talked over.
